Did you see the “Sex and the City” episode in which a lovesick, depressed Mr. Big sits in his car, listening to “I’m in a New York State of Mind”? Thankfully, I’m not in that same unrequited love situation, but I guess you could say that I’m in a California state of mind – wistfully dreaming of golden hills and day after day of sunshine. When it rained here in Seattle last week, I defiantly wore white jeans, short dresses, and sandals.
And so, in honor of that beautiful place in my heart and geographic location where I’ll spend my birthday in July, I want to share a few glimpses of California style.
Leandra Medine (of Man Repeller) recently blogged about “How to Wear Beach Clothes in a Metropolitan City.” Don’t get me wrong: I love New Yorker Leandra’s chic and sophisticated interpretation of beachy. But if you want to see quintessential relaxed, beach looks, you must go to California.
Even before athleisure was a thing, pool slides and ultra comfortable clothes have been part of this California vibe as long as I can remember (and I lived there a long time!)
Some of its features:
- messy hair – not unlike French girl style
- bright/light colors and lots of white
- tees with surf, skate, beach, or California-centric logos
- pool slides, and flip flops.
It’s easy without being sloppy, and often includes a toned body. It’s just…California!
XO, Janea

Excellent post! Why did you have to stir up my suppressed yearning for beautiful California? I love the overall fashion sensibility of Southern California.
Thanks, Melissa. I know how you feel!
Lovely!
Thanks, David! 🙂
