What do you do with pants that are that awkward style in between skinny- and wide-legged? I recently cropped some I bought last year at American Apparel (RIP!). And voila! They were suddenly updated!
Yes, I am sad to see that American Apparel didn’t last here in the U.S. I mean, the concept was definitely noble: clothing made in L.A. It was easy on the conscience to buy clothes you knew were not made a sweat shop. And the clothing was really fun.
I had actually never stepped foot in the shop until I saw these very same pants on a hostess at an L.A. restaurant. I noticed how well they flattered her shapeliness (resembling my own). And I thought that if she could rock them, so could I. I also really liked the fact that they are not an ordinary color for pants.
Once I bought them, however, I realized that they didn’t work with any of my shoes. They looked great with the hostess’s black block-heeled sandals. But I didn’t feel like going out and buying some just for the pants.
So, I figured out a way to make them more versatile and update their look. I asked my seamstress Cheing to crop them. She was skeptical about it at first. But then I showed her a selfie I took after rolling them up. And she conceded that it could actually look pretty cool.
Now all I had to do was to add this white ruffled blouse and matching sandals. Yes! I finally got some after writing THIS POST about white shoes. It’s the perfect outfit for a lunch date, shopping, sightseeing (the shoes are super comfy!) and if you’re in the right office, even work.
As for my bag, I’ve carried this Furla tote with me everywhere these last two weeks in California. It’s the perfect size to hold my wallet, mini camera, and even the giant case for my oversized sunglasses. The scarf I tied around it has sentimental value: purchased in Paris and given to me by a sweet Japanese friend, Keiko who I tutored (in English) when I lived in Mexico.
The scarf has such a lovely design that I had always kept it, even though I never knew how I would use it until now. It is also one of the season’s hottest colors: yellow, which happens to be a perfect compliment to purple. Since pale yellow doesn’t actually flatter my complexion, I enjoy keeping it a safe distance from my face.
I hope you’ve enjoyed the outfit. And if you have some pants that haven’t seen the light of day because the legs are meh: neither skinny nor wide, maybe you’ll be inspired to crop them as well. What do you think of the idea?

Love the mural shots, they look fab! The enhancements you’ve made to the cropped pants look great if you ask me. I’m a big fan of face-lifting my wardrobe and love to get the scissors and stitching thread out.
